Author of Finders and Keepers:

Helping New Teachers Survive and Thrive in Our Schools

Susan Moore Johnson is the Pforzheimer Professor of Teaching and Learning at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she served as the Academic Dean from 1993 to 1999. A former high school teacher and administrator, Johnson studies and teaches about teacher policy, school organization, educational leadership, and school improvement in schools and school systems. Johnson is Director of the Project on the Next Generation of Teachers, which conducts research on how to best recruit, support, and retain a strong teaching force. She is the author of many articles and four books, including "Finders and Keepers: Helping New Teachers Survive and Thrive in Our Schools." Each participant will receive a complementary copy of her book.

Please join us for ACI’s Annual Summer Institute -"Affecting Change in Successful School Communities" on June 19-20, 2008. We will host two days of innovative and interactive sessions for pre-service teachers, new teachers, and experienced teachers! This year’s host city is Bloomington, Illinois, with brand-new state of the art accommodations at the Parke Hotel and Conference Center.

High-need schools present special challenges -- so the Associated Colleges of Illinois' (ACI) Teacher Induction Academy helps new teachers get off on the right foot as well as support experienced teachers. Designed for first through fifth year teachers and beyond, as well as for pre-service and alternative certification candidates, ACI's Teacher Induction Academy combines small group mentoring, workshops and panel discussions in a variety of sessions -- all absolutely free.

ACI's 2007-08 Teacher Induction Academy explores a variety of topics and offers separate tracks geared to the needs of teachers at varying points in their careers – with programs available in both Chicago-Metro and Metro-East St. Louis.

Attendance at all sessions is strongly encouraged in order to gain the deepest understanding of the topics being covered and to acquire the greatest variety of new techniques, knowledge, and strategies. Certified teachers can earn CPDU credits for each session of ACI's Teacher Induction Academy attended depending on the session timeframe.

Each of these sessions will conform to a similar format:

4:00 pm - 5:00 pm      Technology Tricks & Tips for the Classroom (open to all teachers) 

5:00 pm - 6:15 pm      Topical Workshops 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th-Beyond Year Tracks

Participants may choose which Topical Workshops they attend, based on the number of years they've been teaching.

 

6:15 pm - 7:15 pm      Dinner - Networking led by Mentor Online Moderators

7:15 pm - 8:30 pm      Topical Workshops 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th-Beyond Tracks
