G4 TV a Great Place for Game Reviews

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Yes, it is that time of year when I feel the need to blog about purchases you may be making for the holiday season. May I suggest G4 TV. While there are many shows on this channel the one I found to be very educational in the area of gaming and gamers. It is kind of “Entertainment Tonight” review style of games and the consoles they can be played on. They also have a great website that also has reviews and clips of the games. http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/reviews/index.html Finally, may I suggest gift receipts, as long as the game is not opened it can often be exchanged with the receipt. And if you have older games that the kids are no longer playing, bring them into some of the gaming resale stores like GamesStop where they give you store credit to buy new games with your trade-ins. Recyle, Reduse, Reuse!!!

Coupon Codes for Book Orders

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Last week Donna Goodwyn posted places where you could purchase books — I’d like to piggy back off her suggestions and add that you could usually find coupons to add to your discount. For example, go to Google and type in Scholastic Coupon Code http://www.retailmenot.com/view/scholastic.com and you will find additional savings! You could do this for all purchases –  just Google the name of the place you are shopping and add “coupon code” to the end — you will be really surprised at your savings!

Inexpensive Books

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

At Friday’s ACI Induction Academy, I was asked if I knew of places where teachers could buy inexpensive books. I have asked around and really there is no one place but many and it takes time to collect and search them out. Here are the following places I would consider searching for books.
*Library Sale Rooms
*Garage Sales
*Estate Sales (Grandma’s have books)
*AAUW Book Sales
*Amazon.com and search books. .o1 which will bring up some 1 cent books
*Used online books
*Walmart and Target have sale books
*Powell’s Used Sale Page
AbeBooks
Alibris
You may also try local dollar stores and Odd Lots
We might consider bringing books we all have for children we are no longer using to give away at our next ACI event?? Just an idea.
Do you know of any places to find inexpensive books for children? Comment here please!

Strategies to help struggling readers-

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Did you know that learning to read is a challenge for almost 40 percent of kids? The good news is that with early help, most reading problems can be prevented. The bad news is that 44 percent of parents who notice their child having trouble wait a year or more before getting help.

Unfortunately, the older a child is, the more difficult it is to teach him or her to read. The window of opportunity closes early for most kids. If a child can’t read well by the end of third grade, odds are that he or she will never catch up. And the effects of falling behind and feeling like a failure can be devastating.
