Passport to Teaching
The term “alternative teacher certification” historically has been used to refer to every avenue to becoming licensed to teach, from emergency certification to very well-designed programs. The idea has been that there is a need to address the professional preparation needs of the growing population or group of individuals who already have at least earned a bachelor’s degree and now want to become teachers. More and more states have instituted legislation for alternative teacher certification. And more and more institutions of higher education have initiated their own alternative programs for the preparation of teachers leading to a license to teach. A cutting edge program Passport to Teaching, is a national certification program designed to attract career changers into the teaching profession and certify current teachers who need to validate their highly qualified status. The American Board for Certification for Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) is a non-profit organization, partially funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
