Arts & Sciences Colloquium

What:      Learning Together to Strengthen Teacher Preparation: Issues of Education and Equity
The 4th annual Arts & Sciences Colloquium will include sessions that address summer action research projects completed by ACI faculty members, and will highlight promising practices for recruiting, preparing, and retaining teachers for high-need schools.

Featuring:  Michael Gurian, author of “The Minds of Boys.” Gurian is a social philosopher, family therapist, corporate consultant, and the New York Times bestselling author of 21 books. Gurian’s remarks will focus on “The Minds of Boys and Girls: Helping Our Sons and Daughters Do Their Best in School and Life.” Gerald Graff, president of the Modern Language Association and a professor of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will deliver the opening address. Graff is regarded as one of his generation’s most influential commentators on education, not only as a historian and theorist, but also through his impact on the classroom practice of teachers. Graff will be joined by his wife and colleague, Cathy Birkenstein-Graff, a lecturer in the English department at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Together, they will speak on “Demystifying the Academic Game for High School and College Students.”

ACI’s Center for Success in High-Need Schools seeks to close the achievement gap between low-income students and their more affluent peers by providing a key ingredient for success: excellent and diverse teachers for high-need schools.
